Detailed Trekking Itinerary

Overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcanic mountain located in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron, in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. The Maa language, also known as Maasai Language, is called the sacred “Mountain of God.” Ol Doinyo Lengai mountain is part of the volcanic system of the great East African Rift Valley, and it distinctively produces Natrocarbonatite lava. This highly fluid lava is much more relaxed than other lavas and contains practically no silicon.

At the summit crater, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the salt base of Lake Natron stretching out to the north, adorned with a stunning pink hue from the flamingos that inhabit the area. Beyond that lies the border of Kenya. You are drawn to the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro as you gaze towards the east.

Looking towards the west, the scenery is characterized by lush forested hills and steep escarpments, forming part of the western slopes of the Great African Rift Valley. And to the south lies the breathtaking Crater Highlands of Ngorongoro, a top destination for wildlife conservation in Africa.

The climb up Ol Doinyo Lengai is quite challenging due to the intense heat during the day, the unstable ash slopes, the steepness of the terrain, and the powdery rocks. Additionally, water can be scarce, so starting your climb early in the morning is advisable. The best route is from the west, as it allows you to briefly avoid the intense morning sun.
